Dr. Kemal Yavuz ATAMAN
Islam spread via the travels of the Companions and conquest movements. It is noteworthy that the majority of Companions died outside of Arabia. When we look at the past, we can see that important companions took place in the strategic and global conquest movements. Two pioneer exemplary companions, known for their closeness to Prophet (S.A.W.), participated in the conquest and siege of two cities; this became the focus of the developments which changed the flow of the history. Qutham ibn Abbas (R.A.) was the son of Abbas (R.A.) who was the uncle of Prophet (S.A.W.); he was very close to our Prophet. He was the hajj emir and the governor of Mecca and for a short time the governor of Medina during the time of Ali (R.A.) and he was from the immigrants. In the Umayyad period, he participated to Khorasan expedition and he was martyred in the conquest of Samarkand. Abu Ayyub al-Ansari (R.A.) hosted Hz. Prophet (S.A.W.) in his house when He immigrated to Medina and he was also His relative. He participated to all of the expeditions during Hz. Prophet (S.A.W.) period and he was his bodyguard. He also participated to some expeditions during four caliphs; Hz. Ali (R.A.) once left him in Medina as deputy. He died in the siege of Istanbul and he was from ansar. Both companions had the common features like being very close to Hz. Prophet (S.A.W.) and four caliphs, their duties during Hz. Ali (R.A.) period, their participations to conquest expeditions during Umayyad period. There are companions’ influences and special places in Turks’ accepting Islam and their serving. Samarkand and Istanbul, where they participated in the conquest expeditions, are cities with geostrategic and geopolitical features, leading global developments and changes in terms of Islamic Civilization and Muslim-Turkish States. Samarkand is among the central cities in the adoption of Islam by the Turks, the spread of Islam, the development of civilization, and the establishment of many Muslim Turkish States. Besides, Istanbul which was conquered by the sign of the Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W.) is a city constituting the pinnacle of the Turks' service to Islam, and changing the era. There are connections between two pioneer exemplary companions and two cities changing the flow of the history. Many Companions are buried on earth. However, the cities where these two companions were buried with their last expeditions have become the center of the strategic and global developments changing the world history.
